Welcome to Cognitive Distortions!

We intuitively know how our thoughts can change our mood.

"What's wrong with me?" feels different from "I'm doing OK".

Like other mammals, our main goal is to feel safe, but our ability to think and analyse separates us from the rest of the species.

So far, so good, but there is a catch...

Although evolved, we still have an "ancient brain" seeking safety.

What do we do when dealing with uncertainty?

Welcome to the Unholy Trinity of Cognitive Distortions!

Cognitive distortions are irrational thoughts that can lead to inaccurate perceptions of reality.

Usually, the trigger is a feeling of anxiety.

- Black-and-white thinking - "If I don't pass the test, I'm a loser."

- Jumping to conclusions - "She didn't look at me, I'm boring."

- Should statements - "I'm so lazy, I should be exercising every morning."

Questioning our thoughts can be the first step in breaking the cycle of anxiety of our cognitive distortions.

"My boss keeps ignoring me, I'm going to be fired".

Is that true?

Bringing some humour can quickly shift our perception of the situation.

"I'm in psychic mode, reading other people's minds!!!"

When we feel calmer, we can think more clearly and make better decisions.

"I'm going to focus on my work, and that's the best way to be good at my job."
